Dental Veneers 101

Getting dental veneers is sort of like getting an acrylic manicure. Just as acrylics are artificial fingernails that can be used to modify the appearance of your natural nails, dental veneers are thin pieces of porcelain made to look like your natural teeth but better. They’re bonded to the fronts of your teeth to conceal what bothers you about your smile.

This includes:

  • Discoloration
  • Minor cracks
  • Chips
  • Worn down or misshapen teeth
  • Slight gaps between teeth and minor misalignment

You can also think of dental veneers as a versatile tool when it comes to cosmetic dentistry. You can decide to just have one dental veneer placed as a way to improve a single problematic tooth, or you can place a veneer on every tooth that’s visible for a complete transformation. It’s up to you!

According to the most recent data available from the American Academy for Cosmetic Dentistry, it’s most common for patients to have four or more veneers placed at one time.

The Process

At Bell Dental Group, we offer all-porcelain dental veneers exclusively — both the classic all-porcelain veneers and the ultra-thin DURAthin veneers. That’s because we believe that they offer the most natural-looking results, and they can last 15 years or longer without having to be replaced!

We know that seriously considering dental veneers can seem intimidating. That’s why our goal is to give you the information you need to feel great about your decision in a low-pressure environment. When you’re in our office, you’re among friends! And because dental veneer consultations are free, you can explore your options with ease and convenience.

During your consultation, we’ll discuss your idea of a perfect smile. We’ll talk about the things you want to fix, your ideal shade of white, and your treatment options. Then, together, we’ll come up with a treatment plan that fits your needs.

We’ll then take a series of images and impressions of your teeth to guide the creation of your custom veneers. Depending on the type of veneers you decide to get, we’ll prepare your teeth. This consists of removing a small amount of enamel to accommodate the veneer. This ensures that the veneer sits flush against the tooth so that the results look convincingly like a real tooth.

Then, a trusted lab will fabricate your dental veneers. Once the final product is sent back to the office, we’ll bond it to the tooth. The entire process only requires a few appointments — that’s all it takes to get your dream smile!

Keeping You Comfortable Every Step Of The Way

At Bell Dental Group, we’re committed to your comfort. That’s why Dr. Dave Bell, Jr. and Dr. Chuck Bell, twin brothers who have been practicing together for more than 30 years, have created a practice with an inviting atmosphere — both because of the physical space and because of the highly skilled but friendly staff.

Getting dental veneers made and placed is a comfortable procedure. Preparing the tooth — which is only necessary in some cases and may seem like the scariest part — is actually pretty painless. We use anesthesia to fully numb the area, but even so, there are no nerve endings in enamel, so you won’t feel much.

However, if you’re anxious about the procedure, we’re able to further reduce discomfort and stress with dental sedation options. Those include:

  • Nitrous oxide, which is perhaps better known as “laughing gas.” It’s breathed in through a mask and helps relieve tension. It’s fast-acting, but the effects also quickly go away after the procedure is over so you can resume your normal, everyday activities afterward.
  • Oral conscious sedation. This is a pill you take before the dental work begins. After a short period of time, you’ll begin to feel relaxed and maybe a little sleepy. Unlike with nitrous oxide, the effects of oral conscious sedation can linger for a few hours after treatment. Because of this, we ask that you arrange to have a friend or family member drive you to and from the office.

Even if you decide that dental sedation isn’t for you, you’ll still be able to enjoy some of our other comfort amenities! You can watch a movie or listen to music while we work, get comfortable with a neck pillow and blanket during the procedure, and enjoy a beverage from our coffee and drink station before or after the dental work!
