Get Them Off to a Good Start

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month. This is a good time to discuss the importance of developing a good oral care routine at a young age.

You will be responsible for your child’s early habits. Before they have teeth, you can wipe their gums with a damp cloth. When the first tooth erupts, you a baby-sized toothbrush with a small amount of toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice) to gently clean that tooth. When your child has two teeth side-by-side, then you can start gently flossing as well.

As your child grows, they will want to brush their teeth on their own. They can start using a pea-sized amount of toothpaste, and you can model good brushing for them. The American Dental Association recommends brushing for two minutes, twice daily, while being sure to clean your teeth on all sides. Once per day, you should floss as well. Many children have difficulty using dental floss, but children’s flossers (which have easy to grip handles) can make this easier.

Make the First Appointment

Around your child’s third birthday, you can schedule their first dental visit at our office. This is a big moment in their lives and in your life as a parent. Our team understands this, which is why we treat this as the special occasion that it is.

During this visit, you can count on these things:

  • Your child’s comfort will be a top priority.
  • Your child can use a blanket and pillow to stay cozy and warm.*
  • Your child can listen to music or watch a favorite TV show during their exam.
  • Your child will get a tour of our office.
  • Your child will get to see the cool tools we used to protect their smile.
  • If your child is ready for a cleaning, we’ll do one, but if they are anxious, we can wait until a future appointment.

The main goal of this initial visit is to help your child become familiar with our team members and what we do to help their teeth.

* Keep in mind that our COVID protocols may limit this temporarily, but we will do all we can to keep your child relaxed.
