Believe it or not, patients can be anxious coming to see the dentist. We know this, so we offer a lot of what I call creature comforts. We have radio headsets so they can listen to the cable TV, we can hook them up to customizable radio stations so they can listen to music, and we can hook them up with DVD glasses to watch a movie while we're working on them. So those are sort of the ‘comfort blankets,’ that kind of thing, to make them comfortable.
If patients are interested in more comfort than that, we do offer oral sedation prior to their visit or during their visit that can help them just relax a bit more, make the time kind of pass. That's also very helpful for patients, and a lot of our patients are eager to utilize that.
So when we have our patients, you always want to be well taken care of, very comfortable. This relates to our pediatric patients, making them comfortable in our office, and our adult patients as well.
What we've found over the years is very often, the patients at first come to us with a high degree of anxiety. Once we've worked with them for a while, demonstrated we can take care of them comfortably, they develop confidence in the care they're being given. Quite often I'll see a lot of those patients over the years require less and less creature comforts or sedation, if you will, to comfortably get their care done. So honestly, we've proven for a lot of our patients that over time they relax when they come into our office because their expectations have changed, their expectations are being well taken care of and comfortably taken care of, and they kind of cut back on some of those sedation needs.
Because every patient has unique concerns, we offer two types of dental sedation. One of them will be right for you!
Inhaled sedation is a gas mixed with oxygen that you will breathe in through a small mask. Almost immediately, you will feel a mild euphoria, and all your tension will melt away. The effects will wear off quickly after your appointment so you can drive yourself home if you choose to.
We also offer oral conscious sedation in pill form. At a predetermined time before your appointment, you will take the pill so you can arrive at our office fully relaxed. Most patients stay awake with this type of sedation, but you will only have a vague memory of your visit after the effects wear off. You will need a trusted friend or family member to take you to and from your appointment.
Relax With Comfort Options Too
Along with dental sedation, we also provide several amenities to make your treatments more comfortable, including:
- TVs and headphones in every care room
- Cozy neck pillows for your total comfort
- Soft blankets to take the chill off
- A coffee and beverage station in our reception area
