Feel Relaxed and Comfortable at Every Dental Visit

Doctor Joyce Crowe on relieving dental anxiety

One thing we really strive for at Bell Dental Group is to make sure our patients are having as comfortable of a visit as possible. Dental practices aren't the most loved place in the world and we want our patients to know that they can be relaxed. We are going to make this as calm as we can.
We provide blankets for our patients. We have weighted blankets. Some patients really love that feeling of just having that weighted blanket on.
We provide pillows if neck is feeling strained. We also have tinted glasses so they're not having to see the bright lights. They're able to just try to kind of be at peace in that chair and we always encourage patients to bring their own headphones.
We don't mind at all if they're listening to something while we're taking care of them. So just kind of that overall, you know, whatever we can do to bring that peace of mind and have them have the most enjoyable experience they can. We find it helpful to make sure that the patients understand exactly what's going to be happening throughout their appointment at whatever level they want to know.
I always like to make sure, you know, does the patient want to know each step of the way? Do they just want to know, hey we're starting and we've ended? It's really the patient's personal preference. So guiding them through just understanding what are they coming in for? What should they expect? What's normal? What's not normal? And just making sure that there's that understanding of what is happening today and we just guide them through it. Kind of take them step by step.
The assistant is always there for them and letting them know if they have any questions at any point. They can stop us mid-procedure if they have any concern, any questions that they want to ask us. Some patients have so much anxiety.
They're not sure if they're going to be able to make it through the appointment and it's worth having that conversation with ourselves, potentially their medical providers, and if there's something further we can do for them. Some patients are taking Valium before the appointment or Halcyon, whatever level it is that they need. We want that patient to know like we're here for them and we want to see them get the care that they need.

Frequently Asked Questions About Relieving Dental Anxiety

Are there steps I can take at home to relieve dental anxiety?

We believe the more you prepare at home, the better your dental experience will be. If you start to feel anxious about your dental work, take six to 10 deep breaths slowly. Doing so will help you relax and lower your heart rate. It also helps to picture yourself lying back comfortably in the dental chair. When it comes time for your appointment, you can also use these techniques in our office.

Why is relieving dental anxiety important?

Fear of the dentist can be so severe that a patient will not come into the office for decades at a time. Because oral health affects overall health, this person is likely suffering not only in their mouth but also in other areas of their body. It's important that we find a solution for the fear so that every patient can remain healthy.
